Linda Barnes

Linda Barnes was born on June 6, 1949 in Detroit, Michigan and raised there. Ms. Barnes currently lives in the Boston, Massachusetts area with her husband and son.

Linda Barnes went from Detroit to Boston's University of Fine and Applied Arts, where Ms. Barnes graduated cum laude. Linda Barnes then became a drama teacher/director at the Chelmsford and Lexington (Massachusetts) schools. During this period, she wrote and produced two award winning plays - 'Wings' and 'Prometheus.'

Linda Barnes began her female detective series five years after the way was first blazed by two other female writers, Sara Paretsky and Sue Grafton, writing her first novel in 1987. Ms. Barnes has written twelve detective novels to date, eight of them featuring her sassy protagonist, Carlotte Carlyle.
Carlotte first appeared in 1985 in one of Linda Barnes short stories.

Linda Barnes has won the Anthony Award and been nominated for the Shamus and American Mystery Award for her short story 'Lucky Penny.' Ms. Barnes won the American Mystery Award for the Best Private Eye Novel, and has had nominations for the Edgar, Anthony, and Shamus Awards. Her novel, 'The Snake Tatoo' was named one of the outstanding books of 1990 by the London Times.
