Rupert Holmes
Born in England, where his father was a bandleader for the U.S. military forces, Rupert Holmes studied composing and played the clarinet. He also played the bass in a rock band - then while still in his twenties, Mr. Holmes began to write jungles and pop tunes - eventually attracting the Notice of Barbra Streisand. But Rupert Holmes may be best known for his Broadway musical, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, for which he became the first individual in America to receive ? all by himself ? not only the Tony Award for the best book, best music, and best lyrics (while The Mystery of Edwin Drood separately got a Tony for being the best musical), but also the coveted Edgar Award from The Mystery Writers of America for his Broadway comedy-thriller, Accomplice. And that was the second time he became the recipient of their highest honor.
Rupert Holmes also created and wrote all of the Emmy Award winning series of Remember WENN, as well as the Broadway hit Say Goodnight, Gracie. Mr. Holmes began writing mysteries in the seventies, with plots so good they were included in collections from Ellery Queen. Where The Truth Lies is Rupert Holmes first full novel, but certainly not his last. Rupert Holmes is currently writing another to appear in 2004.
