Dorothy Gilman

Dorothy Gilman's full name is Dorothy Gilman Butters. Ms. Gilman was born in June of 1923, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and currently lives in Portland, Maine. Ms. Gilman started off by teaching evening art classes at the Samuel Fleischer Memorial in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, spent some time as a switchboard operator for the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company, then taught creative writing in Darien, Connecticut. Still going strong, Dorothy Gilman was already the author of a number of published short stories and children?s books even before she began the Mrs. Pollifax series, which made her famous. Since then Ms. Gilman has written several mystery books other than her Mrs. Pollifax series, of which A Nun In The Closet is one. Dorothy Gilman is well acquainted with edible and healing plants, living as she did on a saltwater farm in Nova Scotia and raising medicinal herbs there. Ms. Gilman also won the Catholic Book Award for A Nun In The Closet, although not of that particular religion herself.
